Historical background
Quinta de Ermegeira is a historic estate founded in 1526 by the Perestrelo family. The Perestrelo family is descended from Filippo Palastrelli, an Italian nobleman who arrived in Portugal at the court of King JoãoI. His son, Bartolomeu Perestrelo, became captain-donatar of the island of Porto Santo and actively explored the Atlantic. Filippo's granddaughter, Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, married Christopher Columbus - this union not only united two prominent family names, but also gave Columbus access to Bartolomeu's navigational charts and expertise, which many historians believe played a key role in his preparation for his great voyage over the horizon.
Location
Torres Vedras, Portugal is one of the largest agricultural and wine-growing regions in central Portugal, located 50 kilometres north of Lisbon and only 25 minutes from the Atlantic coast.
The region is known for: well-developed infrastructure (A8 motorway, railway line, proximity to Lisbon airport); a sustainable winemaking heritage (DOC Torres Vedras); a mild climate favourable for tourism all year round; growing interest in agritourism, wine routes and historic estates.
